The Southern Connection is where State Highway 1 (SH1) will connect with the new Ara Tūhono – Pūhoi to Warkworth motorway, just north of the Johnstones Hill Tunnels. For the past few years we have been building the new alignment alongside SH1, and now we’re working to bring the old and new together.
The Southern Connection is an integral part of the motorway project. Work is taking place over four construction stages and will enable the widening of SH1 north of the tunnels, where it will eventually connect to the section of new motorway still under construction. Significant road layout changes will be needed while work is being undertaken and traffic management will be in place north of the Johnstones Hill Tunnels while this happens.
Safety is our highest priority, and the reduced speed limit of 60km/h will remain in place for the duration of the works. We ask that drivers keep to the temporary speed limit for the safety of our work crews and road users, drive to the conditions and don’t be distracted by work activity. While we will try to limit disruption to traffic flows, road users should plan ahead and allow more time for their journey. NX2 would like to thank road users for their patience and understanding while we complete this work.
