Southern Connection

WHAT ARE WE DOING?

OVERVIEW OF THE UPCOMING STATE HIGHWAY 1 ROAD CLOSURES

As we progress towards completing the new motorway, we are now at the stage where we need to connect parts of the new road with the existing motorway and State Highway 1 (SH1), this means there will be several road closures on SH1 in both the north and the south during November and December.

At the Southern Connection the project team will undertake work from the Johnstons Hill Tunnels (JHT) up to Pūhoi on the ITS gantry, signage installations and traffic management works (i.e., barrier removal, line marking).

This means SH1 will be closed in both directions – Silverdale to Johnstone Hill Tunnels northbound and Pūhoi to Grand Drive southbound. The detour will be via State Highway 16 or Hibiscus Coast Highway for local traffic, from 10pm to 5am.

  • Sunday 27 November to Thursday 1 December
  • Sunday 4 December to Thursday 8 December
  • Sunday 11 December

From Sunday 4 December to Sunday 11 December there will be a minor road layout change at the Southern Connection with both southbound and northbound traffic using the southbound tunnel.

While we will try to limit disruption to traffic flows, we encourage you to plan your journey over this time and check the Waka Kotahi Journey Planner before heading out https://www.journeys.nzta.govt.nz/

We appreciate the P2W project works have been ongoing and that residents have endured continued disruptions over the years. We are working hard to complete this work before the busy holiday period, and we will be off the road mid-December and back early in the new year, to apply the final OPGA road surface at the northern and southern ends.

Once again, we look forward to opening the project next year and we would like to thank our local neighbours and night-time road users for their patience while we undertake this important work to improve the safety and resilience of the network.

We understand this is a busy time of year for all and people are keen to reach their destinations as quickly as possible.  We ask that drivers keep to the temporary speed limit for the safety of our work crews and road users, drive to the conditions.

Pūhoi on- and off-ramps

South-facing on- and off-ramps have been built at Pūhoi. This means if you are heading north, you can exit at Pūhoi and you can also go south by joining the motorway at Pūhoi..

The new Pūhoi on-ramp currently has both north-bound and south-bound (bi-directional) traffic using it. This is temporary and will remain in place until the motorway opens, it will then revert to a south-bound on-ramp only.

Motorists travelling north will have the option of exiting at the on-ramp and re-joining SH1 or exiting at the Pūhoi off-ramp onto Pūhoi Road.

SH1 south of Pūhoi Road through to 1378 Hibiscus Coast Highway will become a one-way road for south-bound traffic only. This will remain in place until the opening of the new motorway.
